“Brian Mazzaferri’s score moves along quickly, at times reminiscent of Rent, with a couple of little gems tucked in along the way. This gives the piece a firm backbone, well complemented by a very competent five-piece orchestra that plays on stage, but the true strength of this production is in its performers and choreography.”

“Admirable and highly watchable dancers Melissa Bloch and Ryan Watkinson, choreographed expertly and interestingly by Lizzie Leopold, evidence talent and loving care to the feelings involved in coupling and uncoupling…Brian Mazzaferi’s music and lyrics have guts and dreamy ruminations, with a contemporary sound.”

“Green Eyes” is the most professional Fringe show we’ve seen in years… It feels derivative of “The Last Five Years.”

“…It is an unabashedly simple boy-meets-girl story told through modern dance and soft pop songs. While Celina and Nick, meet, greet, metaphorically make out, and then break up, a male and female dancer mirror their emotions through long streaks of movement. Celina, in particular, is truly affecting in the female role…one song where the boy and girl looked for words rhyming with “true” was really unique and authentic.”

“Taken together, they make Green Eyes the rare vest-pocket love story that’s as epic in scope as it is intimate in stature. But it’s also something considerably more important: musical theatre in its most exciting, elemental form. ”

“Green Eyes is a remarkably ambitious piece of theater for such a simple love story, but whether it’s Brian Mazzaferri’s music, Lizzie Leopold’s choreography, or simply the performances from the two singers (Nick Blaemire and Celina Carvajal), two dancers (Ryan Watkinson and Melissa Bloch), and five-piece folk rock band…I’m sold.”

In a statement the musical’s creative team said, “Without realizing it, we created Green Eyes as a form of collective catharsis: for those who feel like they’re drowning in their relationships and can’t get any perspective, for those who narrowly escaped a destructive relationship they still somehow miss, for those who narrowly escaped a destructive relationship and somehow don’t miss it at all, for those who try to find love in the 21st century.”

“A contemporary love story, green eyes tracks the rise and fall of a relationship over time through folk-rock music and modern dance.
